“Where there is much light, the shadow is deep.” --Goethe
You’re sitting in front of your television at night and a sudden movement in the room makes you look up. Nothing’s there. A few moments later, you again spot rapid movement out of the corner of your eye. And again, nothing. This might happen several more times. And every time, you brush it off … Well, your mother always warned you you’d ruin your eyes with too much TV. And you know you should be getting more sleep but you’ve been worried about your dog’s upcoming dental surgery. Or maybe it’s that new compact fluorescent bulb in the lamp, the one that produces a different-colored light than the others and no way will you buy that brand again…
The last thing you’d consider is that you’ve just seen a SHADOW BEING.
A what? This is definitely the paranormal phenomenon voted most likely to be chalked up to imagination. After all, most encounters are fleeting and seem to take place only in our peripheral vision. But reports of much more intense encounters worldwide have paranormal investigators wondering.
Are they ghosts?
Is there a difference between Shadow Beings and ghosts? Those who have witnessed the departed agree that most ghosts look like human beings. They may be pale, even transparent, but ghosts generally have facial features and expressions, they have distinct clothing, and they may even attempt to communicate.
Shadow Beings on the other hand reportedly have no discernable face or features, almost like a silhouette. Occasionally, only the upper part of the human form is visible. They’re silent. And they’re dark, often described as “blacker than black”. Sometimes they’re transparent, even wispy and smoke-like and other times they appear very dense and impossible to see through. They may be tall and extremely thin or shaped as if they’re wearing a long coat. In many cases witnesses report that the being seems to be wearing a wide-brimmed hat (which is why shadow beings are often nicknamed “hat men”). Rarely, these beings are perceived to have red glowing eyes, like the Mothman.
Just to be confusing, Shadow Beings are not necessarily people-shaped. Along with reports of moving blobs, amoeba-like or even geometric shapes, there have been sightings of shadow animals large and small. Shadow Beings are not restricted to the indoors or the night either – they’ve been observed outside and in broad daylight as well.
One quality that all of the shadow entities appear to share is movement – rapid, even unnatural speed. The movement is often jerky and disjointed, and they can appear and disappear quickly. The laws of physics don’t seem to apply to them – Shadow Beings have been observed walking through walls and solid objects. And typically, they appear in places where no shadow would naturally fall. Sometimes they’re seen in mirrors and other reflective surfaces.
Shadow Beings in Legend
Shadowy, human-like figures appear in Native American stories (eg. Nez Perce, Cherokee, Choctaw) and some of these shadow beings are said to be shapeshifters. Similar beings, called djinn or jinn (where we get the word “genie”), date back to pre-Islamic mythology. They too are able to change their shape and are said to inhabit a parallel world to humans. Many people still believe in their existence.
Natural Explanations?
So what’s going on? Let’s allow that some of these reports really ARE imagination, or more likely, mistaken identity. After all, the human mind is hardwired to find patterns and form in whatever is being viewed (such as seeing faces in inanimate objects like woodgrain, moonscapes or clouds). And the phenomenon of waking sleep, called hypnogogia, is more common than previously thought. It’s a state of semi-consciousness where the person can be thinking clearly and believe that they are awake, yet they are actually dreaming. This is almost always accompanied by a sensation of dread. Since many encounters with shadow beings are reported as occurring when the witness had just awakened, hypnogogia could probably account for a lot of them.
Plus, it’s recently been discovered that electromagnetic impulses can interfere with the human brain, causing altered perception. Recent experiments at Laurentian University in Canada showed that people unknowingly exposed to a magnetic field often felt an unseen presence. Since such fields are now everywhere, this may account for a rise in the number of shadow beings and other phenomena being reported.
But what about accounts of shadow beings turning up in photographs? Or being seen by more than one witness at a time? Here’s a few of the theories:
Other dimensions
Science now tells us that 95 percent of the universe is composed of dark matter, which we’re unable to see plus many dimensions that are invisible to us. Of this, theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking says “There could be shadow galaxies, shadow stars, and even shadow people.” In other words, entire populated realms could exist that we don’t know about because we can’t perceive them. The shadow being phenomena might be caused by other dimensions that overlap our own and occasionally intersect.
Time travel
If you watch the Science Channel, you’ve heard there’s no law of physics that prevents time travel. Some paranormal investigators have proposed that Shadow Beings could actually be visitors from the future passing through. In the movies, when time travelers arrive at their destination, they’re perfectly visible – handy for the audience but what if it didn’t really work like that? What if travelers would actually appear as shadows in the time they’re visiting? (After all, they technically don’t exist there!)
Thought Entities
The 1956 sci-fi movie, Forbidden Planet, featured the concept of subconscious thought being brought to life. This correlates with a number of legends from different cultures. Egregores or Watchers were powerful psychic entities created by the collective thought of a group of people. This concept is said to appear in the Septuagint translations of the Old Testament, and in the writings of the Rosicrucians.
Shadow entities can allegedly be created by powerful emotions and negative psychic energy, particularly in a place where something traumatic has occurred.
Extra-terrestrials or Twilight Travelers
Some people feel that there’s a connection between some types of aliens and shadow beings. The shadow beings are said to be the aliens themselves or a telepathic projection. Abductees claim that a type of alien known as The Grays have the ability to pass through walls and closed doors with ease, or appear and disappear without warning.
Some people claim they can leave their body at will through meditation (called astral projection). Other theories claim that we all travel out of body when we sleep. Are shadow people merely the fleeting images of dreamers or twilight travelers passing through?
Encounters with Shadow Beings
Witness accounts vary widely. Many report that the shadow being seems completely unaware of them. Sometimes the shadow being appears frightened or confused when it perceives a human watching them (almost like we don’t belong in their reality any more than they belong in ours). Others seem curious and deliberately watch humans (shadow voyeurs?), but vanish when detected. A few seem to enjoy scaring the bejeebers out of people.
Shadow beings seem to occur more frequently in certain locations, perhaps because of intensive magnetic fields in those areas, or perhaps because the dimensions intersect in specific spots. Several places in the US which are said to be haunted have been found to have shadow people rather than ghosts (Boothill Cemetery in Tombstone Arizona), or sometimes both (Waverly Hills Sanatorium in Kentucky and Civil War sites such as Gettysburg, Pennsylvania).

Have YOU ever encountered a Shadow Being, or something like it?

Hi Dani,
ReplyDeleteI'd read before that vague shadows we glimpse are ghosts. I'd rather think of it that way than think that it may be the onset of cataracts. So, yes, I catch fleeting impressions, but dismiss them as imagination or that maybe I caught the light at a weird angle. or some other 'logical' reason.
BTW, that's interesting about the magnetic fields. Goes right along with my need to logcially explain things. Though I want to believe.
ReplyDeleteI think the increase maybe attributed to technology. We seem to have some source of energy on us at all times (cell phones etc.) What I personally think that "something" I actually assumed was ghost until I read some history here.... have been able to take some of that energy and do something with it. No as before, when this modern hand held technology didn't exist. It is everywhere now! It perhaps took "more" for a ghost to show themselves. What we may be seeing is some sort of essence of a ghost. But, that is my own personal thoughts.
ReplyDeleteI was once frightened awake by one of these guys early as a newly-wed. I was early-morning napping on our sofa when I thought my new husband had returned, as I heard the back door slam open and "angry" foot-stomps to the side of the sofa. I wasn't asleep by that time, naturally, but kept my eyes closed, worried my new hubby wouldn't like it I'd napped after he left the drive. Warily, I peeked out of slitted lids to see an angry "Man in Black" glaring at me. He said nothing, but glared at me for a few seconds then disappeared. It frightened me so much, I gave the sofa to my mother (figuring she'd talk him to death) and I haven't seen him again for many years (just watch the buzzard come back. Well... I'll sic just Mom on him again......)
ReplyDeleteI've seen and heard many other "bumps in the night things", but none frightened me quite like the "Man in Black". Hope he's happy with Mom.
Shadow people exist i saw one in my living room at 8am in Feb 2010-In Wolverhampton- i felt no fear from him he was tall and thin he had no face-He looked like the grim reaper i could see through him yet i was shocked that he was floating a foot or more off the floor.
ReplyDeleteI saw one over 20 years ago but that was a bad experience i was on a paper round at Newcastle upon tyne i was 12 i felt him before i saw him-[I felt the energy drain from my body?!!!-Since then i have had weird experiences off the paranormal-I have been scared to death in my own bed by strange men visiting me in my bedroom.
A man walked through my bedroom wall and was breathing heavy it was scary.
It walked around my bed and i held my breath i felt i was going to die i was pretending i could not hear him but i could.
He eventually left i was scared to death i felt like an animal waiting to be killed.!!!
Since then i am visited on rare occasions i have been dragged off my bed ,left with bruises all over my body and i have felt a cold body on top of me.
I will not say anymore as i find a lot of my experiences very scary and embarrassing-Put it this way i now feel i am a victim of an incubus.
when i was at school i saw a ghost dog...
ReplyDeletethen its face turned inside out, weird hu?
then i saw a guy with glowing red eyes it chased me all around the field but it didn't go away i was scared until the bell rang after the bell rang it vanished i was glad it was over...
ReplyDeletei was terrified.
When i was younger between 15 to 18 i had several encounters with "shadow people or person" and after researching it sleep paralysis seems to be the answer. I would wake up (I think) and see a shadow or "shade" as i referred to them in the corner of my room or by my bed. The being would slowly come closer and a few different things have happened. One night the shadow reached out for me and right when it touched me my whole entire body was paralyzed and I felt (like when you sit on your foot and it falls asleep) in every inch of my body. Another time when it reached out and actually felt like it went inside of my body and I was suddenly unreasonably cold. I can even recall when it would come in between me and my window and the street light that let light inside of my window couldn't be seen or light pass through as long as the figure stood there. I've also heard them in a whisper from inside my head tell me I'm going to die and more occasionally the sound of someone screaming. I had to eventually see a psychiatrist who said that my brain couldn't relax and constantly kept thinking through out the night, I was given sleep pills and the shades went away for the most part. However I became addicted to the sleep pills and chose to smoke weed instead since it helps relax you and I haven't had a problem since. Sleep paralysis seems to be the more likely answer but I've seen, heard, and physically felt these beings and it's the scariest thing I've ever experienced. You are not alone if this is happening to you as well, honestly try smoking just a lil weed before bed (a few hits you don't need to be getting baked out of your mind by any means.)
ReplyDeleteI used to have and still occasionally do have sightings of what seem to be referred to as "Shadow People". When I was 7 or so is when I had my first encounter where it really frightened me. I might have seen them before but there was nothing that really frightened me. But when I was about 7 I was playing hide and seek with some other kids in my basement and I was it. After counting upstairs and going down to search in the dark for people I decided to look behind my father's bar. Behind the bar was a window that was letting light in since it was midday. As I approached the bar though, and got about 10 feet from it, I saw a shadow move on the window, on the inside, on the curtain. As I moved even closer I saw the shadow move across the window fast and then around the top of the room. At this point I moved as fast as I could and beat it back to the stairs and turned on the light. I ended the game there with no explanation. I would continue to see the shadow in my room or out of my window, but it never followed me anywhere but in the house. The part of my experience that startled me, and still bothers me is that one night, a few years later, it followed me to a friends house, and that night, i was not the only one to see it, nor the first to spot it, but I could sense that it was there because of me. I was about 11 or 12 at my friends birthday party. A few of our friends left early but me and another stayed the night. We were playing a board game with his younger brother is his computer room which had stairs that looked up into the bedroom of his. About 20 minutes or so into the game me and my friend caught the younger brother frozen looking up the stairs. There was a distinct shadow that had appeared at the top looking down at us, more specifically me. All four of us saw it and then it disappeared. From that point on, I never felt safe as I knew this was following me. And I am 19 now, turning 20 later this year, and every once and a while I still see it every once and a while, even though I am at college, three hours from my home. I have not heard of any similar stories where the "Shadow Person" actually follows a person instead of haunting a place. Though I have come to be used to it, the people around me who see it get frightened still. Has it ever happened where someone has been followed by one of these creatures?
ReplyDeleteNot so sure that is a shadow person. They tend to keep to a limited area. May be something stronger that specifically attached its self to you. Which is why it follows you and continues to do so no matter how far away from where you first saw it. If you feel that it is a problem try a personal cleansing of some type to break the connection.
DeleteYears ago when my children were little, they had a misty like shadow in their room. They are both sensitive to ghost and though it scared me, it didn't scare them past the first night. That only happened a few times over 9 years ago.
ReplyDeleteRecently, I have felt something brush past my leg, like when a cat rubs on you. There was never anything there. Again we have learned to live with the ghost that "live" in our house with us, so it didn't really concern me. However, last night I was standing in my kitchen getting ready to go to the back of the house for bed and my husband was in the other room turning off lights. We take our dog into the bedroom with us at night. He is a midsize furry black dog. I thought I saw him under the kitchen table so talking to him I started to bend down to get him to come with me. That is when the black thing came out from under the table, through a chair and seemed to change shape and grow at the same time until it was large and almost touched my 8 foot ceiling and just massive. It all happened very fast and I immediately told it to leave very forcibly and it just vanished. It made me feel full of dread and afraid and gave me a splitting headache.
My dog was actually already in my room but came out when I yelled and stood and growled at the spot where the "creature" stood. I felt it was evil and though I couldn't see it any longer, I felt like it was hiding somewhere just watching us the rest of the night.
My daughter then told me that she has seen it in her room at night just watching her.
I have been seeing them for ages there are 2 specific ones in my home there is one in the on-suit bathroom ceiling which watches me when i have a shower it scares me to death, the other lives in my fitted wardrobes in my bedroom it moves all over the house watching but when i catch it it seems to fade away into my room like it waiting i cannot sleep without sleeping pills anymore i cant have light in the house or have electric lights on because this makes it more active i don't know what to do i want my life back it makes noises to u can here it opening my wardrobe and moving in the room and it the hall and kitchen.
ReplyDeleteIf you find yourself wanting to believe, your credibility is suspect.
ReplyDeleteIt was the summer of 1983 and I was living with my three sons in San Jose, California. We'd moved into our rented, furnished two-level home about two months earlier. Downstairs was a see-through fireplace sandwiched between the living room and the entrance, and one day I was sitting on the couch and out of the corner of my eyes I saw that shadow; human in shape, totally black, which took-off within a second after I had looked straight at it.
ReplyDeleteI didn't mention anything about this until about a week later, when seated with my older son in the living room, I asked him: "Have you noticed anything strange about this house?" He answered "Yes, as a matter of fact I have. I saw this shadow-like person through the (see-through) fireplace. When I got up and looked at the other side, nothing was there. I turned numb.
About a year ago (twenty-eight years later) I decided to bring this experience up to him, just to be sure I hadn't been dreaming all of this. I recounted what had happened, and asked him if this had actually happened. "Yes, it did," he answered, "but really I'm trying very hard to forget about it."
