LOVE-STRUCK VALENTINE'S DAY HOP - goodies and giveaways and contests, oh my!

My new paranormal novels in the Grim Series ~ Storm Warrior and Storm Bound ~ are bringing ancient Welsh mythology into modern-day America! And in that spirit, I want to share the Welsh equivalent of Valentine's Day:  it's St. Dwynwen's Day, and is celebrated each January 25.
Dwynwen in the woods
In Wales, Dwynwen is the patron saint of lovers. She lived in the 5th century, and it was said that her outer beauty was matched only by the kindness of her heart. She fell deeply in love with a prince named Maelon. Her father, however, was determined that she would wed another man. Devastated that she couldn’t marry her true love, Dwynwen ran away into the woods and prayed that she might forget Maelon, and that he might forget her as well. An angel appeared bearing a sweet potion, designed to erase from her mind all memory of the prince. However, the magic elixir also turned the prince into a block of ice ~ because only ice could not feel love for her.

Charmed by the beauty of both her soul and her form, the angel made a gift of three wishes to the grief-stricken Dwynwen. First, she wished that Maelon be thawed and allowed to return to his home. Second, that she might play a role in fulfilling the hopes and dreams of true lovers. Third, that she should never have to marry. All three wishes were fulfilled, and Dwynwen devoted herself to her task for the rest of her life.
St. Dwynwen's Well, Anglesey, Wales
Dwynwen founded a convent on the island of Llanddwyn, off the coast of Wales. On the island there is a well where, according to legend, sacred fish swim. It is said that the fish can predict the happiness of relationships.

Couples still go to the well today, hoping that the fish will be very active and stir up the water, meaning that true love and good luck will follow them. In some versions of the story, you must scatter breadcrumbs on the surface of the water, and then lay a handkerchief on top; if the fish disturb the handkerchief, then your love and luck are assured.

St. Dwynwen's Day is marked by the exchange of cards and gifts, music, parties and festivals. It has actually grown in popularity in recent years. But as proof that Wales is a very romantic country, they celebrate St. Valentine's Day as well!

  1. My favorite way to spend Valentine's Day is usually the way I spend it with hubby. He waits on me, brings me chocolates, makes me dinner, and draws my bath. Yes, I am a very happy woman.

  3. I would love to spend Valentine's Day on the beach of some warm, beautiful, country. I would be a sun goddess, absorbing the rays, and my true and soul mate would be beside me, worshiping my body with his eyes. The love for me would be evident in the very way he held my hand so delicately in his as he presented me with a lovely new ring to celebrate the holiday. He would also clasp a beautiful necklace around my neck, not in celebration of the holiday, but in celebration of our love. After we finished playing on the beach, we would return to our villa for love and preparation for a delicious dinner and glorious night of dancing. My mate would continue to show his love and dedication to me throughout the night as his eyes looked only toward me, and he frequently paused to kiss me deeply and passionately. michelle_willms at yahoo dot com

  13. I don't have a "special someone." Valentine's Day was my parents anniversary. They divorced after 31 years of a marriage from hell, and Mom is dead now. Making the day hold any meaning would be hard, because I'm not very open, coming out of a divorce myself. But, in my imagination, there is a nerdy boy with a ponytail from my high school honors classes, whom I "could" have left the prom with (but I chose not to skip out on my date and my brother as chaperone). He'd show up these thirteen years later and tell me that he couldn't get that moment at the prom and a handful of other what-ifs out of his mind. For once in my life, I'd forget all caution, and I'd finally reach for what I want.

    2. It's all too true that this time of year is not necessarily a romantic one for everyone, and for some it's painful. I've had years in my life where I was on my own, and I've always been a big fan of taking the initiative to treat myself well on Valentine's Day (or any day) -- I heard some advice once that I've taken to heart over the years, that sometimes you have to give yourself what you didn't receive as a kid or as an adult.

PS - thanks for the review info. I've added you to my list. :)

  31. Let's fantasize...I have a massage booked at Ruby Spa. My mother is watching the kids and tells me to go early, enjoy myself, and don't come back until the next afternoon. I have lunch at the Power Station Pub, enjoying a book with my meal. A gent at the bar keeps catching my eye and my interest. As I finish my meal, the waitress brings me a decadent brownie with two forks - courtesy of the gent at the bar. I beckon him over with the second fork and we have a delightful chat over the dessert. He tries to convince me to come back to his room at the hotel, but I tell him I'm booked for a massage and a soak at the spa. He sighs and wishes me well. After a BLISSFUL massage, I take advantage of the soaking pool. The gent from the pub arrives and plies me with a glass of sweet wine. I'd forgotten that the pool was also open to hotel guests. This time I agree to his invitation to his room...and the rest is Valentine's history...
